Recently, someone on the social media website Quora enquired about the prevalence of gloves on cartoon characters. According to the Vox website, many Disney cartoon characters sport white gloves.
The simplest explanation for this is that it streamlined the animation process. In the early days of animation, cartoons were not created with computer graphics; each frame required a separate sketch. Rendering the curves, bends, and structure of different body parts was challenging, particularly the hands.
According to John Kenmaker, animation historian and professor at New York University, cartoon characters in the early days of animation featured rounded body corners instead of pointed ones for ease of design. With cartoons initially rendered in black and white, differentiating between a character’s hand and body posed a challenge for the audience.
To simplify the design of hands, including their veins, lines, and finger shapes, gloves became a common feature. Gloves offered a practical solution due to the limited detailing characteristic of the time. Additionally, the contrasting white colour of the gloves against the black bodies provided a visual separation, enhancing the clarity and recognisability of the characters’ hands.
Walt Disney was the first to introduce gloves for his character, Mickey Mouse. According to the Open Culture website, Disney explained this decision, stating, “We didn’t want to have Mickey Mouse with bare hands because he was supposed to be more human. So we gave him gloves.”
Creating five fingers for such a small character proved complicated, leading to the decision to reduce the number of fingers by one. Even today, cartoon characters like Oggy and the Cockroaches continue to sport gloves.
