A protest at Goa Medical College (GMC) has gone viral after a video surfaced showing a massive gathering of doctors chanting, “We want justice.” The protest was triggered by growing frustration against VIP culture and political interference in hospitals. A Reddit post describing threats faced by medical professionals quickly gained over 700 upvotes.
The outrage intensified after Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane suspended a doctor from a state-run hospital, accusing him of “arrogant behaviour,” sparking widespread anger among the medical community.
The video, now circulating widely on social media, shows a packed hospital corridor at Goa Medical College filled with interns, resident doctors, and senior consultants. All are dressed in white coats and standing shoulder-to-shoulder in protest. As chants of “We want justice” echo through the building, the message is clear — the medical staff has had enough of political and VIP interference in their professional duties.
The protest comes shortly after Goa Health Minister Vishwajit Rane suspended Chief Medical Officer (CMO), Dr Rudresh Kurtikar, from the state-run North Goa District Hospital. The reason given was the doctor’s “arrogant behaviour” toward a patient. However, the move was seen by many in the medical community as an overreach, with no fair inquiry or support from the doctor’s side.
This incident became the tipping point, as many doctors recalled facing similar threats and pressure in their careers from influential individuals trying to bypass hospital rules.
The Reddit post describing the situation went viral, stating, “Everyone — intern, resident, consultant — has at least one incident in their life where we were threatened by certain names. This stops here.”
The post, along with the attached video, struck a chord with many across the country, rapidly gaining traction and sparking a broader conversation about the need to protect healthcare professionals from undue influence.
Take a look at the post here:
In response to the backlash, Minister Vishwajit Rane has reportedly issued a public apology, stating he has “immense respect for the medical community” and acknowledged their concerns. He added that he was working to build better systems of accountability and communication.
While the apology has slightly eased tensions, doctors continue to demand structural changes — including protection from political interference, fair inquiry mechanisms, and dignity in their professional space.
The protest is not just about one doctor’s suspension, but about reclaiming respect for the medical profession as a whole.
