A video posted online showed Emile Rossouw removing the poisonous snake, emphasising the dangers of wildlife interactions in civilian areas.

In a startling encounter, a very poisonous cape cobra was found concealed beneath a resident’s bed pillow in Stellenbosch, South Africa. Emile Rossouw, a seasoned reptile wrangler, was called by Stellenbosch Snake Removals, to the location of the incident and arrived right away. Rossouw’s deft removal of the dangerous snake from its unexpected hiding place was captured in a social media video. The dramatic scene made clear how unsafe it may be to get up close and personal with wildlife in residential settings.
The video begins with Rossouw entering a bedroom and lifting a pillow from the bed. He then discovers a poisonous snake hiding. He takes a few steps back and passes the camera to another person in the room. Rossouw then approaches the pillow, lifts it and throws it aside. When Rossouw takes the snake out with his bare hands, it attempts to hide inside the other pillow. The snake slithers in his palm as he exits the room. He then places it on the floor and prepares an empty container for it to slide into. As the snake crawls inside, he secures the lid of the container.

In the post, he goes on to explain the dangerous cape cobra. This snake’s colour varies from near black to dark or light brown, beige, yellow, or speckled, with juveniles having a dark band on the throat. The Cape Cobra is commonly mistaken for the Mole Snake and the Black Spitting Cobra.
It is by far the most venomous cobra. Along with the Black Mamba, it is responsible for the majority of fatal snake bites in South Africa, the post adds. If confronted, the Cape Cobra can stand its position and quickly develop a hood before biting.
Sharing more details about the snake, the post states that – it is found primarily in the Cape provinces, but also the Free State, Northwest, southern Botswana and Namibia. The venom is highly neurotoxic, causing increasing weakening and may impair breathing rapidly. In addition, victims require immediate hospitalisation and in serious bites, antivenom is essential.
