In an unusual case emerging from Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, a 40-year-old college lecturer has filed for divorce from his fourth wife, less than two months after their wedding, citing his ongoing search for an “ideal life partner”.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed yet, has reportedly married four times, with three of those marriages taking place within the last two years. Each of those marriages ended in divorce, and according to reports, he has now approached the family court seeking dissolution of his fourth marriage as well.
According to his statement to the court, the teacher claims his serial marriages are a quest to find a life partner who aligns with his expectations. “When I find the right one, I will stop marrying,” he said. He further explained that he initiates divorce proceedings whenever he feels his wife is unhappy or incompatible with his lifestyle. “After divorce, I also provide alimony,” he added.
The teacher’s pattern of marrying and quickly divorcing has drawn criticism and legal scrutiny. His fourth wife, a 32-year-old woman, has made serious allegations against him and is demanding justice. “He’s addicted to getting married and then divorcing. Just like he abandoned the others, he wants to abandon me too. I don’t want to become just another number,” she said in a statement to the court.
The first three wives – aged 35, 30, and 28 respectively – reportedly receiving alimony as mandated by the court. The fourth wife has also alleged emotional and psychological distress, stating that the same cycle is being repeated with her.
The case has sparked debate in local circles and raised questions about the psychological and legal dimensions of repeated marriages and divorces. The court is currently reviewing the fourth divorce petition, along with the wife’s counter-claims.
