In a bizarre turn of events, a man in Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh, was fined for “not wearing a helmet”. Wondering how that is a problem? Well, he was driving a car. The incident occurred on September 8 near the Ajnara Society crossing in Raj Nagar Extension.

Police mistakenly issued a helmet violation challan, which applies to two-wheelers. For context, light motor vehicles (LMVs) include small cars, jeeps, and vans used for personal or commercial purposes.

The mix-up quickly went viral, drawing reactions from social media users and prompting questions about how such an error could happen. The police later admitted the mistake and assured that the matter would be thoroughly investigated.

Police Call It A ‘Human Error’

Sachidanand, Additional DCP (Traffic), told NDTV, “It is just a human error. We are probing the matter to find out how it happened.”

Meanwhile, officials explained that a traffic sub-inspector had taken a photo of the car parked in a no-parking zone. However, the image was accidentally used for a challan intended for a two-wheeler not wearing a helmet.

As people reacted online, many shared similar experiences. A User said, “Andhbhakts – Hamare up mein hi aisa kyon hota hai.”

Another mentioned having received a similar challan in Noida, where the fine showed a bike’s violation, but the picture was of their car. Someone else shared that they faced a similar issue in Haryana.

Previous Cases of Similar Mistakes

This isn’t the first time such an error has happened in Uttar Pradesh. In August 2024, a journalist, Tushar Saxena, faced a similar problem. He was fined Rs 1,000 for supposedly not wearing a helmet while driving his car in Gautambuddha Nagar district. He was surprised since no rule requires wearing a helmet inside a car.

“I have never driven my car to the NCR area. And if there is any rule that says we have to wear a helmet inside a car, then the authorities must give this to me in writing,” Saxena told NDTV. In addition, the police warned him that failure to pay the fine would force him to appear in court.

Earlier, in June 2023, a government school teacher was also fined Rs 1,000 by the Gautambuddha Nagar traffic police for allegedly driving her car without a helmet in Noida’s Hoshiyarpur area. The woman claimed she didn’t own any two-wheeler in her name.
