Bribes are usually exchanged in cash to leave no digital trace and minimise the chances of exposure. However, in Uttar Pradesh’s Pratapgarh, a rare instance of ‘digital bribery’ has come to light, with screenshots of the transactions circulating widely on social media.
Nandlal, who had been in charge of Hathigawan police station for a long time, has been accused of receiving bribes through transfers to his family members, including his wife and daughter, as well as to other associates.
Viral screenshots of some transactions made in February and August showed amounts up to Rs 25,000 allegedly being transferred to a family member of the accused policeman.
In a separate incident, two constables have been suspended for reportedly soliciting bribes from shopkeepers during a local festival. The incident emerged from Lilapur police station in the same district.
According to Superintendent of Police Anil Kumar, a departmental inquiry has also been initiated against the constables, Premveer Singh and Gaurav Yadav, based on an initial probe by the Circle Officer at Lalganj Police Station.
“We received complaints of bribery against two constables at Lilapur Police Station. Based on the CO’s report, both constables have been suspended and a departmental enquiry has been initiated,” said SP Kumar.
Earlier this month, three cops, including a zonal officer, a constable, and a home guard, were suspended for allegedly accepting a bribe from a Japanese tourist near Galleria Market in Gurugram.
The tourist, who was riding pillion without a helmet while his female companion wore one, was stopped by the police. He was asked to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. Unknown to the cops, the tourist recorded the entire interaction on camera and later shared the video on social media, where it quickly went viral.
