Few can compete with Geraldine Joaquim’s love of travel. The West Sussex hypnotherapist and wellness coach has travelled to more than 60 countries to date. She purportedly takes four or five foreign holidays a year. From trekking through Micronesia’s isolated Yap islands to skiing in Andorra, Joaquim’s travel itinerary is long. However the 54-year-old indicated that there is one country she would never return to.

Joaquim, who treasures her global experiences, told the New York Post that Caracas in Venezuela stands out for her for the wrong reasons. She described it as her worst travel experience.

Speaking to the NY Post, she said that the distressing work trip left her feeling vulnerable and unsafe. She added that she had arrived late at night in Caracas from Uruguay’s Montevideo and was expecting a pre-booked airport transfer to her hotel. However, she found herself waiting alone for hours even as the terminal became deserted.

She said that her phone was not working, and she was completely alone at the terminal at 1 AM.

Reportedly, a man eventually arrived claiming to be her driver. She felt relieved after seeing him but her concern deepened when she noticed that another man was already sitting in the front.

Joaquim further told the NY Post that she would never usually get into a car with two strangers but she had no choice. She said she held onto a small penknife from his hand luggage through the 30-minute ride.

She fortunately reached her hotel unharmed. However, she had to barricade her door with luggage and endure a restless night.

The troubles only were mounting. The following morning, a man snatched her bags and fled when she arrived at the airport. She chased after him only to discover he was offering an informal check-in service.

Reportedly, she was forced to pay a bribe and eventually boarded the flight to Isla Margarita. She then vowed to never return to Caracas.

Despite this unsettling experience, Joaquim remains a passionate traveller. Some of her recent adventures include a South African safari, diving in Egypt’s Sharm el-Sheikh and a festive trip to Belgium.

She told the Post that she wants to feel like she’s somewhere different and that she loves experiencing different cultures.

Stating that being a tourist is a privilege, the former international marketing executive added that she prefers short trips. She admitted that she misses the comforts of her home, family and her pets—two Rhodesian Ridgebacks and a cat named Honey—when away for too long.
