Tibet Earthquake Update: An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.8 occurred in Tibet on Tuesday (January 07, 2025), killing 126 people and destroying thousands of houses. The scene was such that debris was visible everywhere. The epicenter of the earthquake was about 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Mount Everest. The earthquake also shook buildings in neighboring countries Nepal, Bhutan and India.
The China Earthquake Network Center reported the epicenter in Tingri County at a depth of 10 km (6.2 mi). It is called the northern gateway to the Everest region. The video released by Tibet Fire and Rescue shows that many houses in Shigatse city have been reduced to debris. Rescue workers searched the debris of a destroyed house and pulled out an injured person.
Earth trembled with more than 150 aftershocks
The average altitude of Tingri’s villages is about 4,000 to 5,000 meters (13,000–16,000 ft). Strong tremors were felt during the earthquake, after which more than 150 aftershocks of up to 4.4 magnitude were felt. A video released on social media showed the post-earthquake situation in Lhatse town, with shops lying broken and debris scattered on the streets.

According to news agency Xinhua, there are three towns and 27 villages within 20 kilometers (12 miles) of the epicenter. Their total population is about 6,900 and more than 1,000 houses were destroyed. Since 1950, 21 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or more have occurred in Lhasa Block, of which the largest earthquake occurred in Mainling in 2017 which was of 6.9 magnitude.

Chinese President Xi Jinping said large-scale search and rescue efforts should be conducted to minimize casualties and rehabilitate affected people. At the same time, Tibet’s spiritual leader Dalai Lama said that he is very sad. “I pray for those who have lost their lives and wish for the speedy recovery of those who have been injured,” he said in a message.
