Achieving success on social media comes at a price. Influencers must pay for high-quality equipment, styling and even picturesque locations, which can cost them lakhs of rupees. In a similar instance, a travel content creator named Sharanya Iyer spent a whopping Rs 50 lakh plus in 2024, marking a significant shift from her previous philosophy of saving money “obsessively”. The content creator boasts over half a million followers on Instagram and spends most of her money on travelling worldwide.
In 2024, she visited over six countries, including Laos, Thailand, Madeira, South Africa, Greenland and Iceland, with costs ranging from Rs 1 lakh to Rs 8 lakh per trip. Her travel expenses took the largest chunk, with ₹5 lakh spent on flights alone, while the majority of the remaining funds were spent on accommodation, activities and other expenses.
Taking to Instagram, she wrote, “Earn > Save > Spend > Repeat,” adding, “I used to be such an obsessive saver and spend sparingly on the ‘big’ things. 2024 changed that with help and advice and healthy pushes from my dad and friends.”

The travel vlogger further said that this significant decision brought her joy and a sense of safety. “Not everyone needs to agree, but this has been my significant move last year, and it brought me so much joy and a sense of safety in an otherwise difficult year,” she added.
Interestingly, Sharanya’s Instagram video revealed that she also spent Rs 22 lakh on a new Hyundai car and Rs 5 lakh on medical expenses, which were not covered by insurance.
According to the social media post, Sharanya spent Rs 1 lakh on a trip to Laos and Thailand, Rs 8 lakh on visiting South Africa with her parents, Rs 3 lakh in Greenland, Rs 1.5 lakh in Madeira and Rs 2.5 lakh for Iceland (thrice). Additionally, Iyer spent the summer in Europe, which cost her just Rs 60,000, as she won Rs 40,000 at a casino.
Her calculations didn’t include food, daily expenses and shopping, which she plans to cut down on in 2025. “I’m of course not including spending on F&B, daily expenses, material accumulations (big plans to cut that down this year too!)” she added.
The video went viral on the Internet, garnering 1.3 million views and over 400 comments. Some users expressed surprise while many asked about her source of income. A user wrote, “Amazing reel. Influencers often talk about how many countries they’ve been to, but the amount of money needed to travel should also be a topic of discussion.”
Another added, “Every year a bulk of income goes on travel because that’s our priority. Don’t ask us about our savings.”
Someone asked, “What is your source of income? Lucky that you can afford this.”
