India boasts of the fourth largest railway system in the world. With over 8,000 railway stations and trains covering approximately 68,000 kilometres, Indian Railways spans the entirety of the country. However, one particular station stands out for its significant factor: it is the last railway station in India. Notably, both Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose travelled from this station. Singhabad Railway Station

Located on the India-Bangladesh border, Singhabad is geographically the last railway station in India. It resides in the Habibpur area of Malda district, West Bengal. Once a train passes this station, it enters Bangladesh. Established during the British era, this station served as a transit route between Kolkata and Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh.

Historically, the route mainly facilitated goods trains between India and Bangladesh, with limited passenger services. Before Independence, prominent figures like Mahatma Gandhi and Subhash Chandra Bose used this route to travel to what is now Bangladesh. Eventually, the route became exclusive to goods transport, leaving the station devoid of passengers and marking its place in history.

From Bustling Hub To A Quiet Junction

Since the formation of Bangladesh in 1971, Singhabad has played a crucial role in trade between the two countries. In 1978, an agreement was signed to officially allow the movement of goods through this route. This agreement was further amended in 2011 to permit goods trains to and from Nepal, enhancing Singhabad’s strategic importance for regional trade.

During the British era, Singhabad was a bustling station, but today it stands almost abandoned. The platforms are empty and rusting, and the ticket counters have fallen into disrepair. With the cessation of passenger services, only a few staff members remain to maintain the station.

Despite its desolate appearance, the government recognises its historical significance and is working on its modernisation.
