No relief to Chinmoy Das, lodged in Bangladesh jail, court says no to early hearing on bail petition

Bangladesh Ruckus: A Bangladesh court on Wednesday (December 11, 2024) rejected a petition seeking early hearing of the bail plea of arrested Hindu saint Chinmoy Krishna Das. Chittagong Metropolitan Sessions Judge Saiful Islam rejected the petition as the lawyer did not have power of attorney on behalf of Das.

According to the report of news agency PTI, a court official said, “Lawyer Ravindra Ghosh sought advance hearing after another lawyer told the judge that he (Ghosh) had no power of attorney to represent the sadhu.” There is no attorney. After this the judge rejected the petition.”

‘Chinmoy Das was implicated in a false case’

In his petition, Goshe alleged that Das was arrested in a “false and fabricated case” even though he is suffering from diabetes, asthma and other problems. However, the lawyer admitted that he had not gone to jail to get the signed power of attorney from Das. He said, “I will now meet Chinmay in jail and take the Vakalatnama (power of attorney).”

This hearing was to be held on December 3, but on the suggestion of the prosecution, the court postponed its date to January 2, 2025, because no lawyer was present on behalf of the prosecution.

Chinmoy Das arrested on treason charges

On 25 November, Chinmoy Krishna Das was arrested at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. The next day, a Chittagong court sent him to jail, rejecting his bail plea as he was charged with treason for allegedly insulting the country’s flag. Protests broke out after his arrest, with his followers demonstrating in Dhaka and other places, while protests turned violent in Chittagong, where a lawyer was killed.
