Nicholas Pooran to lead MI New York in 2025 MLC after ending international career

Nicholas Pooran, widely regarded as one of the world’s premier T20 batters, has been appointed captain of MI New York for the upcoming 2025 season of Major League Cricket (MLC). The announcement comes just a day after the 29-year-old Trinidadian confirmed his retirement from international cricket with the West Indies.

Pooran represented the West Indies in 167 matches across formats, including 106 T20 internationals — the most by any West Indian. He also retires as the leading run-scorer for the team in T20Is, amassing 2,275 runs.

He had already opted out of the ongoing T20I series against England to rest following a demanding Indian Premier League (IPL) season with the Lucknow Super Giants. He arguably enjoyed his best year in 2024, smashing a record 170 sixes in a calendar year. He followed it up with an impressive IPL 2025 campaign, scoring 524 runs at a blistering strike rate of 196.25, including five half-centuries.

Pooran last featured for the West Indies in a T20I against Bangladesh in December 2024. He has not played an ODI since July 2023 and has never represented the team in Test cricket.
