A group of techies in Bengaluru has decided to follow an age-old tradition to find love. Tired of dating apps, these single friends followed the popular Hindu fasting tradition of ‘Solah Somvar Vrat,’ or the 16-Monday fast believed to help find an ideal life partner.
Last November, the group planned to look for love, this old-fashioned way to appease the gods and fast for 16 Mondays. One of the members even posted about the age-old Hindu ritual of ‘Solah Somwar.’ This is their second attempt at observing the fast.
In an X post, Ritika Agarwal wrote, “We started a fun little thing in nov last year where 6 of us decided to find love the old school (delusional) way & fasted for 16 Mondays. We recently met & unanimously decided to do it again, but with a few more folks. If you’re interested, DM me. We start next Monday.”
“We are a group of entrepreneurs, software developers, marketers & we are also a group of board gamers, standup comedians, nerdy geeks who loves doing super random stuff,” Agarwal added. A user commented, “This is so lovely. Would love to join sometime in the future soon.”
Another simply wrote, “Let’s do this hahaha.”

Speaking with HT.com, she said, “It came very spontaneously to me at that moment that both the pain points can be tackled together by doing ‘16 Somvaar.’ More than a 100 people have DMed me to join 16 Somvaar 2.0.”
Asked whether the fast actually yielded any results, she added, “I think all of us went on really nice dates, and found really cool folks, but as of now, all of us are single.”
What is 16 Somwar?
Solah Somvaar Vrat is one of the most popular religious observances dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is not restricted and can be observed by anyone. In India, it is primarily observed by individuals facing difficulties in getting married or finding a suitable life partner.
The word “Somwar” translates to Monday, which is considered auspicious for worshipping Shiva, and “Solah” means sixteen.
