Tania Sachdev felt the Delhi government might have overlooked her historic achievement at the 2024 Chess Olympiad.

Tania Sachdev is a popular name in the Indian chess community. Born in Delhi, Tania has waved the tri-colour high in many international competitions. Besides the global accolades, she has won several national-level tournaments. Tania kicked off her career at an early age and has earned the national Master (IM) and Woman Grandmaster (WGM) titles to secure a spot in the elite league of chess players in the world. Tania recently hit the headlines after she called out the Delhi government for not recognising her success at the 2024 Chess Olympiad in Budapest.
Tania Sachdev felt the state government might have overlooked her historic achievement. According to her, the support is necessary to inspire and motivate the young, emerging athletes of the country. Her remarks caught the attention of Delhi Chief Minister Atishi who promised to meet Tania and discuss how they could improve, recognise and support talented chess players from the ground level.

Tania Sachdev was born on August 20, 1986. Her father Pammi Sachdev is a businessman while her mother is a housewife. Tania was greatly influenced by her mother who introduced her to the game of chess at the age of six. She quickly developed a passion for the sport and her improvement was quite notable. When Tania was just eight years old, she got her hands on the first-ever international title of her career.
In 1998, she became the under-12 Indian champion and secured a bronze medal at the World Under-12 Chess Championship. Two years later, Tania won the Asian under-14 girls tournament and triumphed in the Asian under-20 category in 2002.
Tania became the Woman Grandmaster in 2005. She was the eighth Indian woman to receive the prestigious title. In the following two years, she won the Asian Women’s Chess Championship before clinching the International Master title in 2008.
Tania Sachdev then went on to push her limits, She competed in the 2012 Women’s World Championship and finished third in the podium. In 2016, Tania bagged a historic gold medal by winning the Commonwealth Chess Championship. She successfully retained her title in the 2018 and 2019 editions of the event.
Tania also excelled in the rapid-team chess competition at the 2017 Asian Indoor Games in Ashgabat. She was conferred with the coveted Arjuna Award by the Indian government in 2009. She also found a place in FIDE’s list of top 50 women’s chess players in the world in 2014.
