A unique natural phenomenon is currently occurring in the Bokaro district of Jharkhand. With the onset of summer, pairs of giant Dhaman snakes have been spotted playing and frolicking in several parts of the town. Locals are capturing this rare sight on their mobile phones and sharing the videos widely.
One such incident occurred on April 21, on Bypass Road, when a bicycle mechanic spotted a pair of Dhaman snakes in his shop.
Rajendra Prasad, 60, was repairing a puncture beneath his bicycle shop. As he reached for the air pump to inflate a tyre, he spotted a pair of large Dhaman snakes underneath the shop. Prasad immediately fled. A crowd quickly gathered as people began recording videos of the snakes.
The presence of the snakes has created an atmosphere of fear among shopkeepers in the area. They say the constant fear of a snake encounter is affecting their work and causing distress due to the multiple incidents.
A similar sighting was reported on Saturday near the PWD office, where a pair of Dhaman snakes was seen. According to workers present, the snakes were mating and remained in the area for a considerable time.
Commenting on these incidents, MP Pandey, a staff member in the security department of Bokaro Steel Plant and a self-proclaimed ‘snake friend’, explained that summer is the breeding season for snakes. During this period, Dhaman snake pairs are often seen together.
He added that Dhaman snakes are non-venomous and are considered friends of farmers, as they help protect crops by feeding on rats. He advised that if such snakes are spotted, people should first try to identify them and avoid causing them harm. Instead, they should alert local snake rescuers so the snakes can be safely relocated. This way, both the snakes and the environment can be protected.
