The retirement age for central government employees remains unchanged at 60 years, contrary to recent claims circulating online. A viral document falsely suggested that the retirement age would increase to 62, effective April 1, 2025. The government has denied these claims, saying no such decision has been made.
The Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) fact-check unit issued a statement on November 19 on X (formerly Twitter), confirming the notice is fake. It said, “A news going viral on social media is claiming that the Government of India has decided to increase the retirement age of central government employees by 2 years. (PIB Fact Check):
This claim is fake.
The Indian government has not taken any such decision.
Do not share news without verifying it .”

The viral document was traced back to an article on a website named NCCCCwhich describes itself as a platform for updates on government schemes, finance and trending topics. The site includes a disclaimer saying that its content is purely informational and does not guarantee accuracy. The viral document copied the text from this article, and in doing so, misled many social media users into believing that the notice was genuine.

A detailed examination also showed inconsistencies in the document. Unlike official Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) notifications, which include a unique identification number, departmental name and date, the viral document lacked these elements.
What Is The Official Retirement Age?
The Department of Personnel and Training has maintained that the retirement age for most central government employees remains 60 years, with specific exceptions for certain professions:
Doctors in government services may work until 65 years.
Specialists in scientific fields can receive extensions up to 64 years.
Minister of State for Personnel, Public Grievances, and Pensions, Jitendra Singh, addressed this issue in the Lok Sabha last year on August 9. He claimed categorically that no proposal to change the retirement age of central government employees was under consideration.
