The techie revealed that they left their IT job to chase their true passion, research, and later landed a prestigious offer as a Nuclear Scientist.
The techie considered that it was a good offer.
Career advancement usually gets a round of applause online, but when a 22-year-old techie shared his journey from earning Rs 3.6 LPA to receiving an offer of Rs 18 LPA job at BARC, the internet had mixed reactions. And guess what, it all started with one simple question: “Is my salary really below standard?” The Reddit user, in a post online, revealed that they left their IT job to chase their true passion, research, and later landed a prestigious offer as a Nuclear Scientist (Scientific Officer-C) at BARC, Mumbai.
Their package in the new job? ₹18 LPA. And the perks? “It includes medical coverage for the entire family, one free domestic flight per year for me and my family, children’s education allowance, and a lifelong pension (they have reinstated the assured pension scheme since April),” they shared.
Techie’s Friends’ Thoughts On His Salary
While initially the techie was over the moon, they were left disappointed after their friends said that the new offer was actually “too low” compared to what they expected in the IT world. “They told me I could’ve earned way more in IT,” they wrote, adding, “and that in the long run, I’ll never catch up to their salaries.” The twist? Many of those friends earn less than half of what the techie is making now.
Contrary to what their friends thought, the techie considered that it was a good offer, given the amount of time it allows him outside of work. They wrote, “Also, while this is a government organisation, there is no political interference in it. This is a genuine question: why do my friends think this salary is low? Is it really low? All I expect is good work, and international vacations once in 3-4 years, possibly with parents.”
Redditors’ Response
Confused, the man turned to Reddit for answers. One person responded with what many were thinking, “You’re 22! You got a jump from 3.6 to 18. The only person whose salary you need to be is what you earned before.” Someone else commented, “For someone starting with 5 LPA, you’re doing great, buddy. If it’s good for you, it’s great. Don’t listen to others.”
Another added, “Your friends are wrong. IT is oversaturated. Frequent layoffs. AI threat. No one has seen the future. Your offer frankly sounds great!”
Perks plus great salary with capping and pension beats great salary without capping but also without pension and job guarantee in my book any day,”
The post sparked a debate on salary comparison, career paths, stability vs risk, and the ever-evolving idea of success.
