Iran Execution Law: The United Nations Human Rights Council has strongly criticized Iran. UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk said on Tuesday (7 January 2025) that more than 900 people were hanged in Iran last year. He said that within just one week of December, 40 people were killed in the name of punishment.
Volker Turk said, “It is extremely disturbing that we are once again seeing a year-on-year increase in the number of people sentenced to death in Iran. It is time for Iran to stop its increasing trend of capital punishment. Must be stopped.”
Why are so many punishments being given?
In Iran, death penalty is given for major crimes like murder, drug trafficking, rape and sexual assault. According to human rights groups including Amnesty International, the Islamic Republic executes more people per year than any other country except China, for which no reliable figures are available.
Is Khamenei putting his opponents to death under the guise of punishment?
Human rights activists are worried about the increasing incidents of hanging in Iran. He believes that officials of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei are using the death penalty as a weapon. It is alleged that after the nationwide protests of 2022-2023, the authorities also gave death sentence to opponents and critics.
The UN human rights office said the majority of executions last year were for drug-related crimes, but added that “critics and those associated with the 2022 protests were also executed.”
