India’s Only Active Volcano In Andaman’s Barren Island Erupts
Minor volcanic eruptions were observed twice within eight days at Barren Island in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, officials reported on Monday.
Barren Island is recognized as India’s only active volcano. The volcano had erupted last time in 2022 as per the official records. The Barren Island is an uninhabited island made of volcanic ash and rocks.
The volcano experienced eruptions on September 13 and 20, though these were minor in nature, officials stated.

Situated approximately 140 km from Port Blair by sea, this uninhabited island is located at the junction of the Indian and Burmese tectonic plates.
Barren Island covers an area of 8.34 sq km, with the nearest inhabited locations being Swaraj Dweep (Havelock Island) and Narcondam Island, both around 140-150 km away.
According to data from the Andaman and Nicobar administration, the first eruption at Barren Island occurred in 1787, followed by minor eruptions in 1991, 2005, 2017, and 2022.
