A man in Florida was arrested after chasing and assaulting an 11-year-old girl in an apartment complex. The incident took place on April 19 in the region of Hillsborough County. Marius Mutu, 43, told deputies that for the past week, someone had been throwing eggs at his apartment. When he saw the young girl walking nearby on that Saturday, he assumed she was the one responsible. Mutu then “chased her, forced her to the ground, and restrained her until adults intervened,” according to a Facebook post by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.”

In a video of the incident, the child could be heard screaming for help as Mutu held her down. “Help me, help me,” the child cried out while trying to break free from his grasp. Neighbours who witnessed the situation began recording and called authorities to intervene. The girl continued to cry out while Mutu tried to restrain her.

One of the neighbours could be heard saying, “I am recording,” while another shouted, “Get off of her.” A man eventually walked up to seemingly stop the assault.

Mutu claimed that he was only trying to take a picture of the child to show to the apartment management. But the residents and authorities were alarmed by his actions.

Deputies from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office arrived shortly after the incident. By the time they got to the scene, a neighbour had managed to intervene. Mutu told the authorities that he had assumed the girl was the one who had thrown eggs at his apartment. He insisted that he was only trying to take a picture of her to report to the apartment management team.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister condemned Mutu’s actions, stating, “This type of behavior is not only unacceptable, it’s reprehensible. The safety of our children is non-negotiable.”

“This child endured a terrifying and traumatic experience at the hands of someone who chose to take matters into his own hands. We remain committed to protecting our children and ensuring those who harm them are held fully accountable,” the Sheriff added.

One resident, Hannah Noel, told Count On News 2, “The long-term trauma, and the parents and anybody else who witnessed it, like there’s kids all up and down these streets every night. I just think, ‘What if it was my kid or our kid?’ Like it could be anybody.”

According to the New York Post, Mutu was arrested and charged with battery and false imprisonment. ABC Action News reported that his bond was set at $6,000 and he has since been released from jail.
