Dhoni becomes 11th Indian player to be inducted into ICC Hall of Fame

Former India captain MS Dhoni was inducted into the ICC Hall of Fame during an event in London on Monday.

He was one of the seven individuals (five men and two women) to be newly added to the list of 115 players that have already been inducted over the years.

He is also the 11th Indian player (ninth men’s player) to be honoured by the sport’s governing body.

“It is an honour to be named in the ICC Hall of Fame, which recognises the contributions of cricketers across generations and from all over the world. To have your name remembered alongside such all-time greats is a wonderful feeling. It is something that I will cherish forever,” Dhoni told ICC.

After making his debut for India in 2004, Dhoni took over as captain of the Indian squad in 2007 for the inaugural ICC T20 World Cup and led the team to the trophy. He also won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the Champions Trophy in 2013.

He has played 350 ODIs, scoring 10,773 runs at an average of 50.57. He also recorded 10 centuries and 73 half-centuries during this period.

He played 90 Tests and ended his career in the format with 4876 runs at an average of just over 38, six hundreds, and just under 300 dismissals as wicket-keeper.

Former India player and coach Ravi Shastri, speaking on the occasion, said that Dhoni’s temperament is what stood out the most in his career.

“I’ve never seen anyone with a temperament of that sort. Nothing affects him. He gets out for zero (he) is the same, he wins the World Cup (he) is the same. There is absolutely no difference, and that’s something I’ve not seen with any player, at least from India,” Shastri said.

“That includes the great Sachin Tendulkar as well, who could get angry at times,” he added.

Dhoni played his last game in international colours in India’s defeat to New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup semifinal and announced his retirement in August 2020.

Matthew Hayden, Daniel Vettori, Hashim Amla, Graeme Smith, Sana Mir and Sarah Taylor were the other players to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.
