The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, known as the world’s largest religious gathering, has attracted millions of devotees from across the globe. Held at the sacred Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga, Yamuna, and the mythical Saraswati rivers converge, pilgrims take a holy dip, believing it cleanses their sins.

Amid the spiritual fervour, a unique business venture has emerged—offering a ‘photocopy snan’ service for those unable to attend in person. For a fee of Rs 500, this service claims to purify the souls of remote devotees by immersing a photocopy of their picture in the sacred waters.

An advertisement on X (formerly Twitter) promotes the service with the tagline, “Maha Kumbh 2025: A once in 144 years opportunity.” It urges devotees not to miss their “last chance” to experience the divine Maha Kumbh Snan. The ad instructs users to send their photo via WhatsApp, promising that a printed copy will be taken into the holy waters on their behalf.

The service further claims this ritual brings “divine blessings,” with ancestral spirits overseeing the sacred dip. The advertisement emphasizes urgency, declaring that this is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, even as the Maha Kumbh continues until February 26.

Shared on February 12, the post racked up more than 16,000 views. The photocopy Snan service quickly gained popularity among social media users. People criticised the company, saying it took advantage of people’s innocence and circumstances.

A user said, “Where it is written that you can wash away your sins like this? This is business. Making money out of people’s foolishness.”

Another commented, “When Govt itself is looking at revenues on Mahakumbh, ordinary folk will do anything in the name of God. The most ordinary commodity in India is Hindu Gods. Do business to earn money. TTD is also like this only.”

“The real cosmic connection (these days by sm, email and photocopy/scan), a user posted on X.

“Blessing will also be in 2D, due to the photo,” another user remarked.
