Bangladesh Violence Against Minority: The recent attacks on the Hindu community in East Sunamganj district of Bangladesh have once again raised questions on the security of minority communities in the country. Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council has strongly condemned these incidents and demanded the government to take strict action against the criminals and concrete steps for the rehabilitation of the victims.
According to a press release from Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council, more than 100 houses and businesses of the Hindu community were attacked during the violence that broke out in Mangalargaon and Monigaon on the night of 3 December. Apart from looting and vandalism, a temple was also damaged. These attacks have caused economic loss of 1.5 million Bangladeshi Taka (about more than Rs 10 lakh).
‘The attackers should be arrested immediately’
The cause of violence is being said to be 20 year old Hindu villager Akash Das. According to the allegation, Akash Das made such a post on Facebook, which was considered objectionable. However, he was arrested before the violence started. The press stated that the Council strongly condemns such communal attacks and demands the immediate arrest of the attackers.
Increasing tension in Bangladesh
These incidents have occurred amid growing tension over the treatment of minority communities in Bangladesh. The arrest of Hindu spiritual leader Chinmoy Krishna Das on treason charges has heightened concerns. Mr Das, spokesperson of Bangladesh-based Sanatan Jagran Jot, remains in custody despite calls from India for his release. Protests have taken place outside the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission in Kolkata and other Indian cities, with political and religious groups expressing anger.
Yunus government’s stance
Amid growing criticism, the head of Bangladesh’s interim government, Muhammad Yunus, has sought to address the concerns of minority communities. In a meeting with religious leaders from different religions, Yunus stressed the need for accurate reporting and urged cooperation to bridge the gap between reality and media reports. “We want to create a process to get accurate information and hold criminals accountable,” Yunus said.
Muhammad Yunus has clearly said that all citizens of Bangladesh, irrespective of their religion, are entitled to equal rights. Let us tell you that the Hindu community in Bangladesh has reportedly faced more than 200 attacks in 50 districts since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government on August 5.
