Jaggery Export: A 30 MT GI-tag jaggery from Muzaffarnagar in Uttar Pradesh has been exported to the neighboring country Bangladesh. Please tell that Muzaffarnagar is famous as Asia’s largest jaggery market. Millions of tonnes of jaggery is traded every year in the jaggery market of Muzaffarnagar. The specialty of the jaggery here is that it is made without any chemical use, so they are naturally sweet and are rich in nutrients.
The country’s agriculture sector is getting a boost
The statement of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry said, this initiative is a symbol of the beginning of direct export of jaggery to Bangladesh from western Uttar Pradesh through farmer productive organizations (FPO) and farmer producing companies (FPC). On January 30, 2025, this consignment was flagged off under the aegis of Basmati Export Development Foundation (BEDF) and APEDA, which is considered an important step towards promoting the agricultural sector in the global market.
The third story of the success of FPO of western UP
The Brijnandan Agro Farmer Producer Company (FPC) has 545 members, including two women directors. This FPO is active in the export of jaggery, sugarcane products, basmati rice and pulses. With training and technical assistance received from Bedf, its members have been able to meet international production and export standards. The ministry informed that this is the third story of the success of the FPO of western Uttar Pradesh in agricultural exports with the support of APEDA. Earlier in 2023 and 2024, Lebanon and Oman were exported to Basmati rice by Neer Adarsh Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited.
What is a GI-tag?
Geography or GI tag is considered special for any object or product. This tag is given by the government to the object known for a unique qualities or specialty. Or you can also understand it in such a way that when an object reflects the characteristics of an area, it is given a GI tag such as Hanuman Garhi Besan Laddus of Ayodhya, the red ant chutney of Odisha, the Dal Bati Churma of Rajasthan or the Mishti of Kolkata.
After getting GI tag, the value of that thing increases manifold. In 2003, the GI tag started to preserve India’s heritage in India. When India signed an agreement with the World Trade Organization (WTO), there was a danger that many other countries would also copy the goods of India and sell it back in the Indian markets at high prices. This will also harm India financially and its culture will also have a bad effect. Due to this, GI tag was implemented.
