All-rounder Wiaan Mulder became the second South African to score a triple century in Test cricket during the second Test against Zimbabwe at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Monday.
Mulder reached the landmark in 297 balls to join Hashim Amla, who had scored an unbeaten 311 against England at The Oval in 2012, in the elite club.
Mulder built on his overnight score of 264 to notch up the second-fastest triple hundred in Test match history. He is leading South Africa in the absence of Keshav Maharaj, and had already racked up the highest score by a batter in their first innings as Test captain on the opening day of the match.
He had reaches his double-hundred off 214 deliveries—making it the second-fastest by a South African, behind only Herschelle Gibbs’ 211-ball double-century against Pakistan in 2003.
Mulder’s 264 runs on the opening day were also the most in a single day by a South African in Test history, and the second-most overall on the opening day of a Test match.
The 27-year-old had come in to bat No. 3 and stitched two mammoth partnerships, 184 and 217 runs with David Bedingham and Lhuan-dre Pretorius, respectively, to guide South Africa to a big total after Zimbabwe elected to bowl.
