Mumbai resident’s viral post on Reddit shows garbage piles in Oshiwara, sparking calls for accountability from BMC and public
News18
A resident of Mumbai expressed frustration over the declining civic sense in the city. The local posted on Reddit, sharing several photographs of rubbish piles dumped on roadsides in the Oshiwara area. The post quickly went viral and sparked strong reactions on the platform.
The post, shared by a resident of Behraum Baug, said, “This is what our roads have come to—piles of garbage, zero accountability,” accompanied by over seven images showing litter scattered along the roads and dividers.
The user highlighted health concerns, noting, “Piles of plastic, food waste, construction debris you just name it. It’s not just an eyesore anymore, it’s a serious health hazard, especially with the monsoon around the corner.”
“This is turning into a breeding ground for diseases, mosquitoes, rodents, and foul smell everywhere. Every civilian walk past it, elderly people live near it. It’s disgusting,” the post added.
The user also questioned the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), stating, “Is the richest municipal corporation of India even aware of what’s going on? Is anyone inspecting these areas? Are there no dustbins or is this just sheer apathy?”
“It is 2025 and till when are we planning to struggle with the basic of roads and proper waste management system,”
The user also questioned the role of the local living in the area, “People in the area are responsible for being so careless. Is it so hard to carry garbage a little further to a bin or wait for collection services.”
The post concluded with a call to action, “This isn’t a rant for the sake of complaining. I need to know if there is a proper grievance portal to get this issue solved.”
Meanwhile, several users on the platform agreed with the post, with some even offering various suggestions. One recommended lodging a complaint with the BMC on X, “Write a complaint to the BMC on Twitter. Call them if you can. We’ve had similar problems in our area and they’re pretty good at cleaning up as quickly as they can. BMC also has a guy around the spot for a few days where people threw their thrash but after that it was all the same. I doubt the BMC can do anything here.”
“Saw your post at the exact moment i was passing through this specific pile of garbage, talk about timing,” a user wrote.
Another user wrote: “I have been seeing this for the past 33 years. The cocktail of not providing a garbage collection for the majority of the people who live in Slums and topped with general disregard of cleanliness amongst Indians. Also the builders who illegally throw their debris and then starts the garbage mound.”
“In most countries they’ll go through the trash, find identifying information such as unshredded letters or bills and then fine the culprits – Even if you hired a third party company to dispose of your trash for you,” another user wrote.
