A recent Reddit post has sparked an online debate after a user aimed Zepto, the popular quick-commerce platform, for a confusing billing system. The user, surprised by the app’s calculations, posted a screenshot of their checkout page with the caption, “I am too stupid to understand Zepto’s maths, someone smart enough please help.” This simple plea quickly gained traction as fellow Redditors tried to solve the mystery behind the numbers. The bill in question involved two items: two 1-litre packs of Amul Taaza Toned Fresh Milk, each priced at Rs 112 and an Ambrane Type C to Type C Cable (60W) that had been heavily discounted from Rs 499 to Rs 19.
Initially, the item total and GST were shown as Rs 611.31, but after discounts, it dropped dramatically to Rs 231.31.
Additional adjustments included a Rs 100 deduction from a Promo Voucher (Free Cash) and a handling charge of Rs 11.99, reduced from Rs 27.99. Other fees like processing, rain and delivery were all listed as Rs 0. Despite these deductions, the final amount still came to Rs 145.29, with Zepto claiming the user saved Rs 554.01.
The Reddit community pointed out the oddities. Users immediately questioned how a total of Rs 611 for the items could translate into savings of Rs 554, given that the final bill only amounted to Rs 145.29.
The thread quickly turned into a fun session, with users making jokes about the absurdity of the numbers. One commented, “They just try to advocate the fact that they are doing a lot for their customers, whereas they aren’t doing anything.” Another shared, “I think I just unlocked a new anxiety: grocery math.”
There was no shortage of witty remarks. One user wrote, “Rain fee is hilarious. Quick commerce just relies on making the buyer feel like they’re getting a deal, but it’s only a matter of time before this myth gets busted.” Someone else joked, “The next step will be to introduce sunlight fees in summer.”
A particularly hilarious suggestion was made by a user: “Surprised they didn’t add an oxygen fee, refrigeration fee, or CEO’s foreign trip fee.” Another user, clearly done with the app’s math, summed it up saying, “App delete kar de bhai.”
