According to the story, once upon a time, King Shwet, a Shiva devotee, ruled in Kalanjar. When he grew old, he handed over his entire kingdom to his son and started living in a cave on the banks of river Godavari. The king installed Shivalinga and became engrossed in the worship of Shiva. In this way, from King Shlet he became Mahamuni Shwet.
While worshiping Shiva, the white sage did not even realize that his life was about to end and the time of death was approaching. When the time of Mahamuni Shweta’s death came, he fell limp at the entrance of the cave. Yamdoot started taking the sage away by force. When the sage started leaving, Lord Shiva appeared to protect the white sage. Bhairav attacked and killed Yamdoot.
When Yamraj came to know about this, he became angry and arrived with his army, riding on a buffalo, carrying Yamdanda. When Yamraj started taking away the white sage by force, then commander Kartikeya attacked Yamraj with his Shakti weapon due to which Yamraj died. Hearing the news of his son’s death, Surya Dev immediately reached Lord Shiva and prayed to revive Yamraj. Then Lord Shiva sprinkled Yamuna water on the mortal remains of Yamraj, due to which he came alive.
