WTC Final 2025: Steven Smith leaves field with dislocated finger

Steven Smith walked off the field with a dislocated finger during the third day of the World Test Championship (WTC) final between South Africa and Australia at Lord’s.

Smith hurt the little finger of his right hand while unsuccessfully attempting to take Temba Bavuma’s catch at first slip off the bowling of Mitchell Starc. The 36-year-old was replaced by young opening batter Sam Konstas on the field. However, after a few overs, Konstas required medical attention too and was replaced by Matt Kuhnemann on the field.

Smith, standing about 14 metres from the stumps, didn’t have much time to react and was caught off guard as he was moving to his left even as the ball came to his right. He immediately fell to the ground in pain before walking off.

South Africa skipper Bavuma was batting on 2 when he was reprieved by Smith.

The Proteas are chasing a daunting a 282 after Australia managed to post 207 in the second innings thanks to Starc’s rearguard with the bat.
