Indonesia Joins BRICS: The world’s largest Muslim country has become a full member of BRICS. Brazil made its official announcement on Monday (January 6, 2025). Brazil’s Foreign Ministry said, “Indonesia, Southeast Asia’s most populous country, will now play a positive role with other members in the reform of global governance institutions and cooperation within the Global South.”

It is noteworthy that this year in 2025, Brazil will preside over the BRICS meeting. At the same time, Indonesia’s joining the BRICS organization was approved in the Johannesburg conference in 2023.

Brazil announced Indonesia’s joining BRICS. This announcement has dealt a huge blow to Pakistan. Actually, Pakistan never wanted Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim country, to become a part of the BRICS organization. However, Pakistan itself is continuously trying its best to join BRICS. For this, India’s neighboring country China is supporting Pakistan. But still Pakistan has not been able to participate in it till now.

Brazil aims to increase cooperation among Global South countries

Brazil is going to chair the BRICS summit meeting this year, which is scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro in July. During its presidency, Brazil aims to promote cooperation among countries of the Global South and pursue policy reforms in multilateral institutions. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that his goal is to develop means of payment to facilitate trade among BRICS member countries.

There was discussion on promoting non-dollar transactions

It is noteworthy that in the BRICS summit held in Russia in November 2024, promoting non-dollar transactions and strengthening local currencies were discussed. The countries included in BRICS are trying to strengthen their local currencies by using dollars in transactions. However, America’s newly elected President Donald Trump became very angry with this. He even threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on the weakening of the US dollar.
