It may arise from nostalgic yearning for happier times. Or from curiosity about what lies ahead? Our motivations may differ, but all of us have, at some point, contemplated time travel. Some dream up a time machine, while some simply hope to wake up in a different era. The latter is what seemingly happened with 34-year-old Nash Pile.
Pile, who woke up 17 years in the past, may seem like a time traveller as she woke up to an entire different world complete with husband and daughter. But, the reality is much stranger than fictional time-travel tales.
One day, Nash Pile woke up to find a 32-year-old man and a young girl in her house. She was utterly bewildered as she was unable to recognise anyone.
She perceived herself as a 17-year-old, unmarried girl. Her past was a blank slate for her. She mistook the 32-year-old man, her husband, for a taxi driver, despite his attempts to remind her of his identity.
According to doctors, Nash suffered a traumatic brain injury, resulting in short-term memory loss. Throughout this ordeal, her husband’s support made her fall in love with him anew. Nash admits that forgetting her daughter saddens her the most.
Although they are a family again, now with a son, Nash’s memory remains only 20 per cent intact. She struggles to recall events from two days prior and experiences moments of complete incomprehension.
