A video of a woman who abandoned traditional housing to escape high rent costs has taken social media by storm. The woman, Destinee, shared her journey on TikTok, revealing her bold decision to live on the streets rather than struggle with a $2,000 monthly rent and other expenses.
In the now-viral Instagram video, Destinee admitted that she initially tried living in her car, like many others seeking a more affordable alternative. However, her plan was short-lived as her vehicle soon became damaged and unusable. “I spent countless nights in that car without air or heat,” she recalled.
Faced with limited options, Destinee had an honest conversation with her employer about her living situation. To her surprise, instead of being asked to leave or facing termination, she was met with unexpected understanding.
The caption of the video reads, “A woman opens up about living in a gym and explains why she chose homelessness.”
Take a look at the video here:
In the video, Destinee claims to sleep at night in a little room at work that has a mini fridge, a washbasin, a lamp and a recliner. She disclosed that she went to a gym to shower and get ready. After taking a shower in the gym, she also showed herself getting ready there. In addition, she disclosed that she pays $75 a month to rent a storage facility for her belongings.
“When I tell people I am homeless they think I dig in dumpsters to get food but that’s not true. I chose to be homeless because I was tired of paying bills. Now I live rent-free and eat ribs,” she said. To prepare nutritious meals for herself at work, she even revealed that she uses a meal prep service.
The video was shared on February 23, collecting over 6,80,000 views. Users responded in different ways in the comments section. Some said her notion helped her maintain a higher level of living, while others found it difficult to comprehend why she chose this.
A user said, “I’m not mad at her but I am mad that rent is so high that people have to come up with creative ways just to have affordable shelter. This country is so stressful.”
Another commented, “My peace and stability would be worth the $1,980, but that’s just me.”
“Hair done nails done AirPods lighting and phone to record content! Homeless looks different in 2025,” a user expressed on Instagram.
“I love what you’ve done and how you made this work!! Survival skills on,” remarked another.
