What began as a simple act of kindness turned into a disturbing encounter for a woman that left her shaken and restless. Despite dedicated women’s coaches and security personnel, the said woman took to social media to share her harrowing experience on the Delhi Metro and highlight the challenges faced by women passengers. In a now-viral Reddit post, the woman recounted helping a man in his 30s who appeared confused about the platform at a metro station.
After offering him directions, the man asked her if she was heading the same way. Thinking little of it, she moved on, but what followed next left her completely shaken. The woman realises that the man is continuously following her. “I felt he was behind me, so I sat beside someone where there was no space left on the platform,” she wrote. “He came up to me and said, ‘Can I sit here?’ I looked around and wondered, ‘Where? Does he want to sit on my lap now?”
Feeling alarmed, the woman got up and tried to distance herself, but the man continued to follow, asking for water and hovering around. Recalling the anxiety of the moment, she said, “Even when there were so many people, I felt unsafe.”
It was only after she pretended to be on a phone call that the man left. But the woman was still frightened that he might return, so she quickly moved to the women’s coach.
Though she described that the incident was not even that major, the emotional toll it took on her was undeniable. She confessed, “I normally travel alone, reply, even give warnings—but this time my body just stopped.”
The post rapidly gained traction online, with users expressing shock, empathy, and frustration. A majority of Reddit users shared similar stories, questioning women’s safety in Delhi Metro.
“As a boy, I can confirm women are not safe in the Delhi Metro. I always notice some creeps and 40+ uncles staring at girls. It’s so uncomfortable,” read a comment.
Sharing his experience, a user stated, “I was with my mom in the metro, some guy in his 50s kept staring at her, so I got up, blocked his view with my body, and started staring back at him. When he noticed me, he immediately withdrew his eyes and got up at the next station.”
“A guy kept asking me where I studied, if I lived in a flat or PG, and if we could be friends. Now I always prefer the women’s coach,” another shared.
A user added, “Stay safe, sis. Even my classmates complain about this often.”
“This won’t change unless future generations are properly educated by parents and society,” another commented.
An individual stated, “A guy kept following me in the metro once. I changed lines thrice, and he was still following me. I complained to the policemen, and they chased him off.”
“I’ve mistakenly been in the non-ladies’ compartment once. It was hellllll. 8-10 men leering at you throughout the journey. It’s so so so uncomfortable. People in this country have not zero but a negative civic sense! So you’ve no choice but to keep your head down for your mental sanity. And yes I know the diff between a glance and a stare,” an account remarked.
Her post has reignited concerns about women’s safety in public spaces.
