Tihar Jail, one of India’s notoriously famous prisons, is home to some of the most high-profile criminals, along with thousands of other convicts. While there are several stories surrounding the grim existence behind the high walls of the prison, not much is still known to the public. However, a female intern recently got the opportunity to receive an inside tour of the Tihar Jail and meet the inmates, and the details are truly eye-opening. Diya Kahali, a psychology intern from Ghaziabad, carried out a two-week internship at the prison and shared her experience on LinkedIn.

In a post titled “Surviving and thriving: My reality as a psychology trainee at Tihar Prison Complex,” Diya recounted all that happened with her as the only female intern in an all-male unit. “Being one of the only women in an all-male facility (literally just me and one female guard) was eye-opening, to say the least. You’re hyper-visible and invisible at the same time: not quite taken seriously by inmates, sometimes overlooked by staff, and always aware of the eyes on you,” she wrote.

Diya went on to share how she quickly learned to always ask for guidance, check every instruction, and most importantly, prioritise her safety. Her daily tasks included interviewing the inmates, bringing together their untold stories and presenting weekly reports with all the information she gathered. Noting that “rapport building” helped her the most, Diya also specified that one should not give out personal information but only offer questions to help the inmates understand one rather than sympathising. “Inmates may not always open up, and sometimes you’ll be met with silence, suspicion, or even dominance. Stay cool, stay confident and never let your guard down. I found unexpected warmth, support and understanding from the police heads, which made a world of difference,” she continued.

Her post quickly grabbed the internet’s attention, with many praising her detailed account of experience. One wrote, “Helpful insight, Diya,” while another added, “Really loved reading this! The way you navigated such a challenging and unfamiliar space with so much clarity and strength is truly inspiring!”

“As I interned at Tihar, I can relate to your point of being the only woman in an all-male cell,” a user added.

Many others also enquired for information regarding the internship process at the Tihar Jail.
