A 25-year-old Florida woman gave birth to a baby girl on Wednesday in a moving train when she was travelling on a subway ride in New York City. The woman passenger, who had been missing for months, was travelling around 11:30 AM on a southbound W train in Manhattan. According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA), she experienced labour pain on the train and fell to the ground. As soon as commuters noticed what had happened, a few quickly rushed towards the woman and the others alerted the train conductor.
With no medical personnel immediately available, bystanders assisted as best they could and completed the delivery, ensuring both mother and son were safe. As per a report by the New York Times, bystanders assisted the mother, Jenny Saint Pierre. A video of the same has surfaced online that captured passengers holding the newborn moments after birth.
It is worth noting that the conductor halted the train at the 34th Street-Herald Square station, where an NYC Transit Train Service Supervisor, the conductor, and multiple NYPD officers arrived to check on the woman and her baby. The EMS (Emergency Medical Services) reached the scene shortly and transported the woman and the baby to Bellevue Hospital. Fortunately, both were reported to be in good condition.
NYC Transit President Demetrius Crichlow praised the swift response of New Yorkers and stated, “This is another example of New Yorkers coming together to help each other, assisted by caring transit workers and other responders, reflecting the best of the subway community and this city. We are thrilled that both mother and Baby W are doing well and look forward to welcoming both of them back aboard for a lifetime of reliable—and hopefully less dramatic—rides.”
CBS News New York, in its report, mentioned that they were able to track down the woman’s sister, who had reported her missing months ago in South Florida. On knowing about her sister and newborn niece, she said she was relieved to hear that both of them were doing well. In the same conversation, she also expressed that she was confused as to why she had travelled to New York, as they don’t have any relatives in the city.
