A lot of Indian youngsters have settled outside the country for reasons such as a better pay scale or standard of living. However, life in a foreign country comes with its own set of challenges. While NRIs deal with the emotions of being away from family, the high cost of living is another setback. A recent viral video where an Indian woman said she would choose to return to India despite making Rs 88 lakh in the US has ignited a discussion among social media users on the question of working and settling abroad.
The caption accompanying the video reads, “Back to India? Is this for real? #reverseimmigration #indiansinamerica #jobsinamerica.”
The woman, currently working in the pharmaceutical industry in supply chain management in New York, revealed her annual salary was about $105,000 (approximately Rs 88 lakhs). When asked if she was happy with such an impressive figure, the woman expressed her dissatisfaction, saying, “No. It’s good for the basics but I am always looking for more.”
In terms of her educational background, she revealed that she completed her Bachelor’s degree in computer science engineering and later earned a Master’s in supply chain analytics. She also expressed interest in pursuing an MBA but was not willing to pay for it.
“I would definitely ask my company to sponsor me. I don’t know exactly what the fees would be but I would definitely go for a sponsorship and not spend the money myself,” she said.
While discussing certifications that could improve career opportunities, she suggested the CPIM (Certified in Production and Inventory Management) certification for those in supply chain roles could be beneficial. Apart from this, she advised aspirants to obtain a project management certification.
In his final question, the social media user asked the Indian woman, “If you get the same money here and in India, which one would you choose?”
“I will go back. Yeah, I would go back to India,” she replied.
Her surprising answer has left many viewers puzzled, leading them to question why she would want to leave the US despite her successful career. Although comments were later disabled, some social media users reportedly shared their thoughts.
One user questioned, “Why come here when you want to go back?”
Another remarked, “This is the problem with 1st generation people living abroad. They are never satisfied with their salary according to their skills and experience. People born in Canada, England, US or Australia learn to enjoy and appreciate life and try to be satisfied with their salary.”
