A recent post on Reddit has sparked a debate over the Indian work culture. An employee, who recently returned back from a Europe trip, was not only welcomed to the office by “taunts” but also with 248 pending emails and late-night meetings scheduled without asking her.
Not only did the pending tasks frustrate her, but it was also HR’s “Aaj toh madam Europe se time mil gaya?” (“Oh, madam finally got time after Europe?”) that bothered her. The employee shared how she was left feeling “drained and depressed” despite coming back refreshed from the trip.
“Rant alert. I land back in India. I go to the office, feeling refreshed, smiling and instantly, the HR gives me that look. ‘Aaj toh madam Europe se time mil gaya?’ Another colleague chimes in: ‘Bas ghoom lo, kaam toh yahin karna hai na.’ All in that taunting, passive-aggressive tone we’ve mastered here,” read her post.
“Open my laptop: 248 emails. Teams notifications like ping ping ping. Late-night meetings scheduled without asking. A client waiting with a ‘small change’ that derailed my day. And everyone here? Hustling, grinding, exhausted… and pretending that’s normal,” she added.
The employee further said that the worst part was “we glorify this.”
She added, “We wear burnout like a badge of honour. We think rest = laziness. If you take time off, you’re ‘not serious about your career.’”
The woman concluded the post by saying that all of this has left her feeling more disconnected.
“It’s like Europe reminded me what being human feels like and coming back here reminded me what being a corporate robot feels like. Just done,” she said.
As her post went viral, several netizens took to the comment section and expressed their views.
“I do love European culture, they take us for granted here,” wrote one user.
A second said, “Europe actually gives you a feeling of having a life.”
“The main problem is that India doesn’t have proper labour law,” another expressed concern.
