India has recently seen a wave of concerts with big names such as Diljit Dosanjh, Karan Aujla, Dua Lipa and Alan Walker performing in various cities. As expected, the high demand led to ticket prices soaring and resellers offered tickets at much higher rates.
Amid all this, a social media post about a 1986 concert of Kannada legend Dr Rajkumar has caught everyone’s attention. Why? Because of how much the tickets cost back then.
The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), features a vintage pamphlet from a 1986 concert held at the Tennis Stadium in Cubbon Park, Bengaluru. Back then, ticket prices ranged from Rs 30 to Rs 200, offering a striking contrast to today’s ticket costs. The caption that accompanies the post reads, “Rs 200 tickets for a concert in 1986. Aura >>>>>>>.”

The pamphlet quickly gained traction online, racking up an impressive 63,000 views. The comment section was flooded with a range of reactions.
“I will pay 2,000 in a heartbeat for a concert with only Annavru songs,” read a comment.
Another added, “The money raised from these evening programs was used to build police quarters, the district stadium, and other facilities. Annavara era.”
“Dr Rajkumar would not have charged anything for this! Only the co artistes & support staff would have been paid. Collections (minus payments to co artiste, for venue etc.) would have gone towards the noble cause,” said another person.
Some compared it to current prices with one pointing out, “6-8% inflation is so far and it would be approximately 3,000 around at today’s value. For now, 3,000 seems nothing big amount for a concert, just in the 80s, you could buy some properties.”
“Tickets start at Rs 30, but Rs 200 for the elite class is reasonable—far below the inflation-adjusted Rs 3,150 as on today and much cheaper than IPL tickets, which cost around Rs 5,000,” an individual shared.
“Ticket were priced high for a cause to build a building,” another remarked.
Dr. Rajkumar, born Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju on April 24, 1929, was a celebrated Kannada film actor and singer. Known as “Natasarvabhouma” or the “emperor of acting,” he made a significant impact on the Kannada film industry, starring in over 200 films over five decades.
His voice, often called “kogile Kanta” or “the voice of a Koel,” became iconic, especially for his devotional songs. He was honored with the Padma Bhushan and Dadasaheb Phalke Award for his outstanding contributions.
