A British man’s family chose to honour his sense of humour even in death, fulfilling his last wish to have a coffin with a Snickers motif.
Known for his cheerful nature and sharp humour, Paul Broome was a care assistant who worked with persons who had learning impairments.
Over the years, he often made jokes about wanting to be buried in a coffin that looked like the famous chocolate bar. After his death, his loved ones learnt that he had made the request formally in his will, despite their first dismissal of it as just another of his jokes, according to Fox News.
Broome’s family was determined to grant his final wish, so they had a coffin made to resemble a partially opened Snickers bar. “I’m nuts!” was painted on the side of the coffin as a tribute to his playful personality.
“Paul’s family informed us that he was one of life’s true characters, and his farewell needed to reflect that,” Ali Leggo, the funeral arranger for the service, which was planned by F A Holland (Co-op) Funeralcare in Chichester told New York Post. “His quick wit and sense of humour touched so many people, and the coffin was a fitting tribute to his unique personality,” he added.
Since Broome, born in South London, was a huge supporter of Crystal Palace FC, the coffin also had the team’s insignia as a personal touch.
The funeral procession made a poignant detour past Paul’s beloved Bognor Regis café, where his pals cheered him on in their personalised tribute T-shirts as he made his farewell trip in his candy-themed coffin.
“The family received nothing but positive feedback from those who attended, with many commenting on how the personal touches made the service a true celebration of Paul’s life,” the funeral arranger, Leggo claimed. “It was a privilege to help his family bring his final wishes to life,” he stated.
In recent years, unconventional funerals have gained popularity.
