An IT professional recently reflected on his experience of working at a product-based MNC through a mid-sized startup. The techie, in a Reddit post, opened up about how the toxic work environment of his workplace took a toll on his mental health. Having spent only two months of his three-year contract at his job, the IT professional called the experience “one of the most mentally draining” phases of his career.
In his Reddit post, the techie wrote, “I’m working alongside one more colleague at the client location, and the level of stress and anxiety we’re both going through is unbearable.” He also admitted that the constant pressure and unlikely expectations at the workplace also caused him symptoms like panic attacks.
The techie mentioned that the workday stretches from 10 AM to 8:30 PM, adding that the employees barely get an hour for lunch and tea combined. Despite the horrific schedule, the manager keeps questioning in case of any slight deviation. “Just yesterday, I was asked why I left ‘early’,” the techie wrote.
Further referring to the daily 11:30 AM stand-up call as “more of an interrogation”, the professional alleged that his manager often yells at the team. “He constantly threatens escalations over even minor issues, creating a pressure cooker environment where we’re expected to operate at 100% efficiency all the time,” the techie explained.
According to the professional, there is a lack of personal time, with weekends offering no relief either due to an unspoken rule wherein employees are expected to be available and working. He referred to the work culture as “authoritarian”, further writing, “There’s absolutely no room to push back or question anything.”
As per the techie, his team lead and manager are “35+ y/o lifeless uncles” dealing with a lot of family issues, which makes them resort to work and stay in the office, fully operable even on weekends. Through his accusation, the professional implied that the work style of his seniors contributed to the toxic environment.
Upon being circulated, the viral post prompted reactions from users who advised him against working in the company. One of the users asserted that “No amount of money will be able to compensate for the toxic environment,” further admitting that he also had a similar experience, following which he “quit the job in the same month.”
