Why is the Economic Survey presented before the budget?

Economic Survey 2025: The Economic Survey 2024-25 aims to assess the economic performance of the country in the last financial year. This survey shows what kind of trend is going on in industries like manufacturing and services and what kind of policy should be made to promote development by resolving challenges.

What is an Economic Survey?

Economic survey is a document in which a detailed analysis of the country’s economy is done. In this, focus is done on certain sectors. It is divided into two parts- Economic performance is evaluated in the first part, while the second part analyzes socio-economic issues such as education, poverty and climate change. It also analyzes GDP growth, inflation and business estimates.

When is the Economic Survey released?

The budget session of Parliament starts from 31 January and the budget is presented on 1 January. The Economic Survey is usually presented a day before the budget speech. That is, it is introduced on 31 January.

Who prepares the Economic Survey?

Economic survey is prepared by the Economic Division of the Department of Economic Affairs. It is prepared under the supervision of the Chief Economic Advisor, while it is released by the Finance Minister before the budget.

What are the things involved in the Economic Survey?

Both parts of the Economic Survey mention economic indicators like agriculture and industrial production, infrastructure, employment, currency supply, prices, import-exports and foreign exchange reserves. This shows what things it affects the fiscal strategy of the government.
