“AI is cool i guess,” reads Sam Altman’s ‘X’ bio as the OpenAI CEO experiences perhaps one of the busiest weeks of his life. “it’s super fun seeing people love images in chatgpt. but our GPUs are melting,” Altman wrote in an ‘X’ post hours after introducing a new image generator to his popular AI chatbot ChatGPT. In another update he requested people to go easy on his AI tool: “can yall please chill on generating images this is insane our team needs sleep.” All this thanks to Ghibli prompt that literally altered the face of the Internet. Altman doubled down on the opportunity to let the folks using ChatGPT know that millions of new users had signed up in a matter of few hours. The OpenAI CEO then proceeded to engage on Elon Musk-owned platform, especially with the Indians. So… what changed?
Ghibli-fication Of Internet
From politicians to cricketers to personalities to Elon Musk to the rest of us – nobody could escape the trend of Ghibli. Love it or hate it, some pfps are here forever, including that of proud father Altman. For the unversed, OpenAI’s GPT-4o model recently introduced an in-house image generator. It came with lots of capabilities enabling the consumer to feed in a prompt to get their desired output in practically no time. But since its drop, the model has wholly been used to generate Ghibli-style images.

Studio Ghibli is a Japanese animation studio that is considered the gold standard in the world of animation and storytelling. Its intricate, endearing, empathetic, and immersive style of deep storytelling are seen in The Tale of the Princess Kaguya (2013), Spirited Away (2001), Grave of the Fireflies (1988) among many other masterpieces woven by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata. Using the opportunity, folks used iconic scenes from movies, sports, television, history, technology – anything and everything under the sun – to create their own Ghibli-style art. Others simply Ghibli-fied their childhood and family photographs.
Altman Turns To India
Since the drop of GPT-4o model, Altman’s ‘X’ feed is mix of fresh new updates brought to the chatbot owing to the large influx of users and the rest is him gushing over Indians.
In one post, the OpenAI CEO responded with an emoji of tricolour to a post made by the Indian government sharing snaps of Ghibli-fied PM Narendra Modi. Altman then reposted a post by India Post – World’s largest postal network.
“what’s happening with ai adoption in india right now is amazing to watch. we love to see the explosion of creativity–india is outpacing the world,” Altman praised the growing landscape of AI in India.
In yet another post, Altman turned himself into a Ghibli-cricketer from India. He wasn’t done yet. Responding to cricket great Sachin Tendulkar’s version of iconic 2011 ODI World Cup photos, the OpenAI CEO simply wrote: “want to play?”
Desis Feel Sus
Why is an AI company’s chief suddenly showing interest in India? *Suspicion intensifies*
“Over the past few days, you’ve been praising India and Indian customers a lot! How did this sudden love for India come about? It feels like there’s some deep strategy going on behind the scenes,” a user quizzed Altman.

“OpenAI ceo doing engagement farming!” wrote a second.
Many wondered what Altman was doing was “milking the audience”. Think of “Foreigners react to 3 Idiots” trope or “Foreigners try Indian snack for the first time” on YouTube. India means numbers.
India – ‘Stonks’
There are too many of us. Surprise, surprise. Most populated country on the planet can significantly impact the DAU (Daily Active Users) and MAU (Monthly Active Users). Be it social media platform or a company. Long queues on Bookmyshow website and app during Coldplay ticket sale? You remember. “India is the world’s click farming factory – very easy to reach multi million DAU (Daily Active Users), almost impossible to monetize for value. I can write an essay on this topic,” a user, reacting to the developments, quipped.
Responding to Altman’s praise for India, founder of CRED Kunal Shah wrote: “India is the MAU farm of the world.”
Tech reporter Ivan Mehta who goes by the ‘X’ handle @IndianIdle noted the rise in ChatGPT downloads in India in the last 30 days.
“ChatGPT Downloads for the last 30 days in India (Appfigures): 7.7 million
Worldwide downloads:43 million.
Android figures: Downloads in India were 7.1 million. The next best was Brazil with 1.7 million.
User growth engine for sure,” Mehta wrote.
Altman posting about Indians thus made sense and wasn’t out of ordinary, he added.
