Rishi Trivedi, a taxi driver in Delhi, died by suicide last year after being harassed by his wife and in-laws for money

Screengrabs from videos recorded by Rishi and Atul before they died by suicide.

At a time when social media is abuzz with debates on the suicide of 34-year-old Bengaluru techie Atul Subhash, #JusticeforRishi is trending on X. Like Atul, Rishi Trivedi, too, allegedly killed himself on December 27, 2023, due to harassment from his wife Shikha Awasthi, according to reports and Rishi’s brother Omji Trivedi.

Omji took to X, drawing similarities between his brother’s and Atul’s suicide cases. He also shared the video recorded by his brother before his death where he blames his wife for his suicide.

“Like Atul Subhash, my brother was also driven to take his own life due to unbearable harassment by his wife, Shikha Awasthi. On December 27, 2023, he committed suicide, unable to bear her cruelty anymore,” Omji wrote on X.

Later, in a series of thread posts, Omji narrated what his brother and his family went through.

Omji alleged that even after a year, no FIR had been filed against his brother’s wife. He said, “The day after my brother’s death, she came from her parents’ home, created a scene, and demanded ₹5 lakh from my father.”

“She threatened that if we didn’t pay, she wouldn’t let us perform my brother’s last rites. She insulted us, shouted in the street, and hurled abuses at our family. Despite this, the police took no action. I filed a complaint at the police station, but it was ignored,” he added.

Omji stated that his sister-in-law Shikha’s parents and siblings supported her while she harassed his family.

According to Omji’s posts, Rishi hailed from Auraiya, Uttar Pradesh, and drove a taxi in Delhi for 12 to 14 hours a day to make ends meet.

He alleged that Shikha deprived Rishi of peace and sleep and food and when their mother tried to intervene, she threatened his family with dire consequences.

“Just four days after their wedding, she was caught stealing jewellery. Twice within two weeks, her true face was exposed, after which she started intimidating and threatening us. On December 24, she called her sister to our street, created a public scene, and left after insulting and humiliating my brother. Before leaving, she threw her saree at him and said hang yourself with this. On December 25, my brother took his taxi and went outside Delhi. The next day, he used that very saree to end his life,” Omji narrated the turn of events which led to his brother ending his life.

He added, “Even now, she is only after money, and the law has failed to hold her accountable. Instead, our grieving family is being dragged into false cases and endless harassment.”

Omji said his brother’s death was not just a personal tragedy, but a glaring example of the injustice and misuse of laws against men in this country.

Several social media users came out in Omji’s support and urged lawmakers to safeguard men against injustice.

Probe Launched Into Atul’s Death

A 34-year-old engineer from Bihar, Atul, died by suicide at his Bengaluru apartment on Monday, leaving behind a 24-page note in which he accused his estranged wife and her family of harassment. The social media users came out in support of the deceased man and demanded justice for him.

A case has been filed at the Marathahalli police station based on the complaint filed by Atul’s brother, Bikas Kumar, against four people, including Atul’s wife Nikita Singhania, under sections 108 (abetment of suicide) and 3(5) (when a criminal act is carried out by multiple persons in furtherance of a common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the FIR, the accused filed multiple false cases against Atul and demanded Rs 3 crore to settle the matter. The FIR also notes the allegation that Nikita was demanding ₹30 lakh for allowing Atul to meet their son.
