Instagram users worldwide are raising concerns as their feeds are unexpectedly flooded with violent and NSFW (Not Safe for Work) content. Despite having Sensitive Content Control enabled, many continue to encounter disturbing videos featuring graphic violence and explicit material. Frustrated users have turned to X (formerly Twitter) to voice their complaints and share their experiences. The sudden surge in such shocking content has left users unsettled, with many demanding an immediate resolution from Instagram.
A user wrote, “Something happened to the Instagram algorithm today. I’m getting way too many fights, accidents and shooting videos. All of them were posted within the last 12 hours. Almost all of them are marked as sensitive media.”

Another added, “Today, Instagram feed is full of physical violence, sensitive content, sexual abuse, sex caught in camera. Is everyone getting such reels or is it only me?”

A person shocked by the situation, wrote, “What tf is wrong with #Instagram? Every second or third reel is extremely sensitive content. Mr. Zuckerberg needs to fix it as it’s been like that for more than 12+ hrs. New fears unlocked. Truly the darkest day of social media. Instagram = Dark Web.”

Many users questioned whether the issue was widespread, with one person writing, “What’s wrong with Instagram today? My feed and reels keep showing sensitive content—cringe, uncomfortable, and unwatchable. Shockingly, this is happening to the majority of people.”

One person even shared a video showing their feed filled with sensitive content warnings.
Meta did not release an official statement regarding the sudden influx of sensitive content on users’ feeds. However, the company apologised and confirmed to CNBC that the issue was caused by an “error.”
“We have fixed an error that caused some users to see content in their Instagram Reels feed that should not have been recommended. We apologize for the mistake,” a Meta spokesperson said in a statement shared with CNBC.
According to Meta policy, the company aims to protect users from harmful visuals and take down content that is highly graphic or violent.
The platform prohibits posts “depicting dismemberment, visible innards or charred bodies,” as well as content containing “sadistic remarks towards imagery depicting the suffering of humans and animals.”
However, the platform does allow certain graphic content when it is meant to condemn and raise awareness about serious issues like human rights violations, wars or terrorism. Such content may come with limitations, such as warning labels.
