An Indian tech worker recently spoke about the unfair expectations put on Indian employees by US companies. He pointed out how Indian workers are often asked to adjust to late night or early morning meetings to suit the schedules of US teams, while American workers are only expected to work within their regular hours. The engineer referred to this situation as a “slavery mindset” because Indian workers are expected to change their schedules during daylight savings in the US. This pattern, according to the techie, has become normal, as it has been passed down from senior employees to newcomers. Indian workers feel proud of their long hours, while their managers get promoted.
Taking to Reddit, the individual wrote, “We Indians still have that slavery mindset. Why do we have to adjust according to the US team while working with US clients? Let’s say you work with a US team. Then your manager will always force you to adjust according to them. You will have to join late night and early morning calls, but the US counterpart team will only join meetings during their working hours, 9 am to 7 pm at max.”
“Moreover, if they have daylight saving time, then you have to schedule meetings even later till 11 pm or 12 am, just to make sure they don’t have to sacrifice their precious hours. And all this so that your manager gets promoted to the US. Moreover, this becomes a ritual and gets passed on from seniors to freshers and it gets normalized. Then we Indians take pride in working late nights, with US people,” the techie added.
Reacting to the post, a user mentioned, “Americans don’t normally set such late calls, it’s our own desi brethren who act more goras than the goras.”
Another shared, “I work in a product company, when someone comes for a visit from abroad, it’s like Diwali in the office. I am like bro they are our colleagues with white skin that’s it.”
“Because they are the client. If you were the client, employing a US team to do something for you, they would adjust to your timing. Client is the king,” a comment read.
One more added, “That isn’t always true. I have worked with US teams in my past company and they used to attend the calls at 6 am (their timezone) just so it wasn’t too late for us. Unless the majority of the people in the meeting were from the US, we never had a call post 9 pm. But that was still within the same company. And you using the word ‘client’ might mean, as what others are saying, they pay you.”
Since the post was shared on Reddit, it has garnered over 1,000 upvotes.
