Why did Wiaan Mulder declare with his score on 367 during SA vs ZIM Test?

Wiaan Mulder said that the former West Indian batter, Brian Lara, is a legend and deserves to keep the highest Test score record after declaring South Africa’s innings at 626 for five. Mulder remained unbeaten on 367, the fifth highest Test score ever.

The declaration, on day two of the second Test against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo, came as a surprise to many who said that Mulder could’ve gone past Lara’s record of 400 not out first.

“Firstly, I thought we had enough and we needed to bowl,” Mulder, Proteas’ stand-in captain for the match, said after the day’s play. “Secondly, Brian Lara is a legend. For someone of that stature to keep that record is deserved.”

“If I get the chance to do it again, I’d do it exactly the same way. I spoke to Shuks (Shukri Conrad), and he felt the same way. Brian Lara is a legend, and he deserves to keep that record,” Mulder added.

Mulder broke several records during his marathon knock, including the highest Test score by a South African batter, going past Hashim Amla’s 311. His was the second triple century by a South African, also the second fastest ever off 297 balls.

“Today at breakfast somebody mentioned that 277 is the highest score by a debutant captain, so that was the first hurdle. I got past Hash’s (Hashim Amla) score and only then realised that I had got to 312,” Mulder said.
