With everyday technological advances shaping our lives, it was only a matter of time before the robots entered our kitchen. And not many imagined a city other than Bengaluru to start it all.
The robots have taken over cooking and cleaning duties in India’s Silicon Valley. And that also means many may no longer require domestic help, according to a report in The Times Of India.
For Manisha Roy, it all changed seven months ago when she decided to replace her cook with a sophisticated kitchen robot.
“Now I do other household chores while the food is getting ready because I know my food won’t be charred. The robot makes cooking fun, faster and easier,” she told ToI.
From chopping and sautéing to steaming and kneading, the robot’s pre-programmed recipes take care of it all. Manisha puts the ingredients in and lets the machine do its thing.
“My kitchen robot can chop, sauté, fry, stir, steam, and knead. I just add the ingredients shown on the panel, as per the pre-loaded recipe. I don’t even have to be around while the robot performs the tasks, such as cutting vegetables or frying them,” she added.
It is economical and saves her time. “I used to pay her Rs 2,500 a month, but would end up doing a lot of the work myself. Now I’m saving a lot – up to Rs 9,000 a year,” she said. Her husband, Naveen, has also become a foodie and often prepares meals with the robot’s help.
Not only are robots changing routine tasks but challenging traditional gender roles. Men are increasingly participating in domestic chores and entering the kitchen.
Because of the kitchen robot, Naveen, for instance, has developed a passion for cooking and now prepares dishes his family enjoys. Manisha said she is pleased with her husband’s improved culinary abilities after using the robot to create excellent dishes.
Similarly, 18 months ago, architect Meera Vasudev opted for robotic cleaning equipment. The robots move through her house, sanitising around furnishings and then going back to their recharge stations when they are done.
For finer dust and tough stains, Meera uses a vacuum cleaner. The robots are excellent at cleaning surfaces. She even thinks that deep cleanings by professional cleaners should be more widespread in India, and she has grown to love this service.
