It’s been quite a week for Royal Challengers Bangalore fans. First, they got to witness the Men in Red lift the maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) title after an excruciating wait of 18 years. Their most celebrated player Virat Kohli was in the thick of it and seeing the star finally pose with the coveted trophy was perhaps the highlight of their nearly two decades of unrelenting support. Life had come full circle and the celebrations began. Then, tragedy struck as the sea of fans, who had gathered to see their team celebrate and share the win with them a day after the IPL heroics, were caught in absolute chaos. A stampede occurred near the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium and as a result, 11 lives perished.

The loss of innocent lives in the fatal gathering triggered an online outrage of epic proportions. From calls to arrest Virat Kohli to public outcry against Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to shunning RCB for reportedly going ahead with the event despite advice from local cops, the Indian public desperately sought accountability and answers.

The flip side to this, however, was that those who blamed RCB over the stampede tragedy weren’t offered bouquets either. A section of RCB fans have fiercely defended their franchise players and YouTuber-turned-journalist Shubhankar Mishra recently experienced it firsthand.

Journalist-turned-YouTuber Shubhankar Mishra is a popular name in the social media sphere. Nearing 6 million subscribers on YouTube and an army of 11.9 million followers on Instagram, Mishra’s videos occasionally make headlines.

Having served as a news anchor in legacy media houses, Mishra’s second innings on YouTube where he routinely uploads videos on politics, geopolitics, entertainment, lifestyle, and cricket, among other beats, has been a successful one.

Outrage Over Video

On June 4, the day of the stampede tragedy, Mishra uploaded a video on his YouTube channel titled: “RCB’s Victory Parade or a Funeral March?”

The video caught the attention of viewers, including RCB fans, who strongly believed that Mishra’s video thumbnail was in poor taste. The thumbnail showed Virat Kohli, Jitesh Sharma, and RCB skipper Rajat Patidar posing with the trophy. The photo, however, was edited to depict blood on their hands and the winning trophy.

Additionally, a section of RCB fans did not take a liking to the intro of Mishra’s 17-minute video.

An excerpt of it has been roughly translated from Hindi:

“The colour of RCB’s jersey was being splattered outside (M. Chinnaswamy Stadium) but inside, the same colour was intoxicated in celebrations. Is any trophy worth over 11 lives? Can a trophy be so precious that despite the loss of innocent lives, it is being celebrated? Is any victory so big that the screams of dying people cannot be heard? Can humans become so insensitive that the celebrations will go on despite the people dying outside? This question is for the Karnataka government, organizers, all RCB players, and everyone who ignored the tragedy and continued with their celebrations.”

The clipped part of the intro of the video was later circulated on social media platforms where online commenters, including RCB supporters, panned the perceived accusatory tone of the video.

There was a spike in Google searches made using the keywords “Shubhankar Mishra” and “Shubhankar Mishra Instagram Followers” and a decline in his followers count on social media.

While his YouTube subscribers count remained unscathed, Mishra’s official Instagram account saw a decline of over 87,000 followers since Thursday.
