Fans were left shocked when Ravichandran Ashwin announced his retirement midway through the Border Gavaskar Trophy. The legendary off-spinner revealed his decision after the third Test ended in a draw at The Gabba, Brisbane. Ashwin made just one appearance in the series which India lost 3-1. While many were perhaps not ready for his retirement, there was one who had predicted it even before the Indian team embarked on the tour of Australia. In November, a person asked his followers to make their predictions for the 2024-25 Border Gavaskar Trophy on X (formerly Twitter). Responding to the post, a fan wrote, “Ashwin announcing retirement in mid-series.” His comment went viral after Ashwin drew curtains on his illustrious career after representing India in 106 Tests, 116 ODIs and 65 T20Is.
Once the prediction resurfaced, many wondered how the fan managed to foretell the future. One of them humorously asked if “Ashwin Anna had conveyed his decision” to the guy ahead of the Test series.
Another commented, “Really appreciate your prediction bhai.” In reply, the person mentioned that it was an easy and “logical prediction”. “If you follow your players from childhood you know them well,” he added.
The fan observed that Ashwin had already become India’s fourth-choice spinner in overseas conditions, following Kuldeep Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar. In the upcoming home series, Kuldeep and Sundar are expected to lead the spin attack.
Ravichandran Ashwin remained a key component of the Indian Test team for more than a decade. He was especially recognised for his dominance on home soil. He has won the Player of the Match award as many as 11 times and shares the record with Sri Lanka’s Muttaiah Muralitharan.
Ashwin is India’s second-most wicket-taker in Tests after Anil Kumble. The 38-year-old has picked 537 scalps including 37 fifers and 25 four-wicket hauls at an average of 24. On the all-time list for most Test wickets, Ashwin occupies the seventh spot.
Despite being a bowling all-rounder, his batting records in the longest format of the game are truly fascinating. Ashwin has struck six Test centuries while aggregating 3503 runs. In ODIs and T20Is, Ashwin has claimed a total of 228 wickets.
