Cricketer Rohit Sharma, who recently retired from Test cricket, is now spending quality time with his daughter. Recently, she asked him to buy her a Labubu doll. Despite his best efforts, Rohit couldn’t figure out what it was. It turns out he’s not alone. Many people are baffled by this quirky new internet trend that’s quickly gone global.
What Is a Labubu Doll?
Labubu is a collectible plush toy created by Hong Kong-based artist Kasing Lung. The character first appeared in his 2015 book series, The Monsters, inspired by Nordic mythology. Labubu is a mischievous yet kind elf-like creature, easily recognised by its big eyes, pointy ears, and a toothy grin featuring nine sharp teeth.
Though the toy has been around for nearly a decade, it’s now being mass-produced by Chinese company Pop Mart, which packages it in “blind boxes” — mystery packs where buyers don’t know which version they’ll receive. This element of surprise has added to its appeal, especially among collectors.
A Luxury Toy With a Hefty Price Tag
Labubu’s popularity has reached new heights — quite literally. A human-sized version of the doll was recently auctioned by a Beijing-based auction house for 1.08 million yuan (approximately Rs 1.2 crore or $150,000). According to Reuters, this set a new record for blind box toys, marking their shift from trendy playthings to serious collectibles.
Why Is It Going Viral Now?
Despite being around for years, Labubu has recently found itself in the limelight thanks to numerous celebrity sightings. K-pop star Lisa from Blackpink was spotted with a Labubu keychain hanging from her luxury handbag — and soon after, the trend exploded in Thailand and across Southeast Asia.
Big international names like Rihanna, Kim Kardashian, Dua Lipa, and David Beckham have also been seen flaunting Labubu accessories. From plush toys to vinyl figures and keychains, it’s now become a fashion statement. The packaging style, surprise element, and a flood of unboxing videos and social media reels showcasing collectors’ finds have made Labubu irresistible — not just for kids, but for adults too.
Indian Celebrities Join the Trend
This isn’t just a global phenomenon; India is catching up fast. Ananya Panday was recently spotted with a pastel pink Labubu keychain on her designer bag. Meanwhile, Karan Johar jumped on the trend with a cheeky Instagram story:
“No one escapes it, we all desire it, but can’t always find it. It can make your heart skip a beat. No, it’s not love, it’s Labubuuuu…!!!”
With Bollywood fashionistas now in on the action, Labubu has officially entered the Indian trend circuit. The doll is now available on platforms like Kalakar, Hype Fly India, and Crepe Dog Crew.
